So my annual FF draft is three weeks away, and I'm starting to get ready. I have a few questions if anyone can help.
Background: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 K, 1 DEF, 7 Bench. PPR league. $100 auction draft, $100 to get in, & winner takes home $800.
1st we have a 2 round rookie draft. You don't have to pick in the 2nd round if you don't want to. Rookies are the only players that are allowed to be kept. They are $1 the first year, $3 the second, $7 3rd, $14 4th. Their keeper eligibility is trade-able, as are the next year's draft picks. The last 7 teams are in a lottery for the first 7 picks, and the last 7 picks go in reverse of their standings. Not a snake draft. Many people don't draft in the 2nd round. After the rookie draft is the regular draft. Top players go for big money while there is usually a lot left over at the end at very good values. Still, elite players win the league.
I am in a different situation than normal this year. I realized early that I wasn't going to win and capitalized on the large market for players by trading Randal Cobb, Darren Sproles, Julius Thomas, and someone else before most teams were willing to pack it in. I have Luck for $7 and Cordarrelle Patterson for $3 already. I traded for Montee Ball ($3 this year) when he wasn't doing anything and Giovani Bernard ($3 this year). So I have $16 wrapped up in 4 pretty good players already. Along with these, I have my own 1st pick (I was 3rd to last so it will be a top 7 pick) as well as the 9th and 12 picks. I'll also have the 17th, but I picking 4 rookies would be pretty tough to swallow. We have the ability to trade draft picks for other draft picks and keepers only, which I may try to do to get a higher pick.
I will either trade up or use all of the 1st round picks. It's hard to use them all in that I'll probably have 2 highly questionable players with the 9th and 12th picks that will be eating up bench space. Still, these are trade-able commodities during the regular season for teams looking to retool for next year. So come week 4 when I start to need my bench, I might be able to trade one or two of these players for an elite but non-keeper player. So the first thing I need help with is who are the top rookies as well as when they might start contributing. Which talent is so worth so much that he would be worth trading up for? Are there 17 rookies worth taking to make that 17th pick palatable?
The second thing is draft strategy. I envision Patterson as my flex player, so I really only need 2 WR, a TE, and a DEF if someone can sway me to think DEF is that important (I usually stream it). I'm not spending much on the other positions I'm keeping/drafting ($19 for 7 players), but none of them are quite elite yet either. So right now I plan on going real big on Graham, spending on one of Megatron, Demaryius Thomas, or Dez Bryant, and then waiting for value in the later rounds since it will probably cost $50-60 to get two of those.
I feel like I have a big leg up on the competition this year, but I can still screw that up. Any help would be appreciated.
