The average salary went from $3,014,572 in 2010 to $3,095,183 last year. Since this league began, the average MLB salary has gone up almost 5%, and starting next season the minimum salary will have gone up 20% over that same span of time.

I would be for a raise to the 128M - 130M range.

I voted yes, and I think we should raise the cap to $132,500,000. This would represent a 6% increase.

The salary went up last year by 2.67%, so an increase of 6% is a bit excessive. We can always raise it again next year if needed. I would vote 'YES' for an increase of 2.4% - 4.0% (128M to 130M). Any higher, and I'd vote 'NO'.

The salary went up last year by 2.67%, so an increase of 6% is a bit excessive. Thinking back only one year is shortsighted. The average MLB salary since we began this league has gone up 5%, and our salary cap has not increased during that time. Given that wages have gone up 5%, an increase of 6% does not seem excessive to me.

I think raising it to $130mil is good. I like round numbers.

The average player made less than 3.1M last year. For a 30-man roster, that's less than 95M on average. 125M seems plenty reasonable for next season. Now that I think about it, I'm leaning towards voting to not raise the salary cap at all next season.

The average player made less than 3.1M last year. For a 30-man roster, that's less than 95M on average. Yes, I know. I covered that in my original post on the salary cap. Trouble is, we don't use only average players in this league. We keep and draft the top players. Certainly there are plenty of players on everybody's rosters who make below the average salary, but given that the average salary keeps going up, and that the minimum salary just went up 20%, there is an increasing likelihood that more and more players who are worth owning in this league will be making well above the average salary. Just owning six players who make the minimum salary is about to become $500,000 more expensive. The luxury tax threshold in baseball was $148M in 2007. It rose to $155M in 2008, $162M in 2009, $170M in 2010, and $178M in 2011. I don't think we need to be at the luxury tax level, but if you want this to reflect real life, then you have to be open to the same 5-6% increases they've been doing.

I still think that if put to a vote, 130M is the ceiling for what I'd find reasonable in this league. But if I'm in the minority in my thinking, I'd be out-voted anyway...

$125,000 is still a good number, IMO. I always thought a low salary cap helps competetive balance too. Top teams trading useful picks or players for money can only help the lower teams.

With so many of the elite players having huge contracts I think raising the cap to $130 million is fair. I understand the competitiveness of keeping the salary cap low, but it's also unrealistic to keep it the same as the price of talent continues to soar.
That being said, if we raise it this year, I don't think we should raise it for at least another two years. I was envisioning that the cap be raised $5 million every three years, so if that were the case, at the end of the 2014 season we would raise the cap to $135 million. Unless for some unforeseen circumstances it needs to be changed up or down.

I read in a story about the new CBA that the AVERAGE salary of the top 125 players is $14,000,000. That's crazy, yo.
