Last year some managers was forced to drop players long before the keeper deadline because of holiday travels, and some of theose players were added by other teams and kept. A discussion was had on changing the deadline to add players, and some felt that it was unfair for other managers to pick those players up and keep them. Since we have plenty of time before the keeper deadline, it seems like as good of time as any to make a decision on this. Here's the main thread of the discussion last year: killinmesmalls.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=ww&thread=5332&page=1

I agree that this needs to be dealt with. If you are not willing to trade for a player then you should not be able to just pick them up for free because somebody needed to drop them earlier than the mandatory deadline. The other solution would be that you declare your keepers and don't worry about actually dropping left over players until after the deadline. Nobody is adversely affected by non-keepers being on a roster on ESPN for a few extra days.

I don't really care when the date is...I just think the "last day to add" deadline and the keeper deadline should be the same. If it needs to be moved ten days either way to avoid any problems due to holiday travels, that's fine with me.
My main reason for wanting to keep them the same is to keep things simple. We already have a lot of rules in this league. One date to remember for both things would be nice.

In my mind, this whole thing is ridiculous. In the off-season, there are no limits to who is on your team (salary-wise, etc). Therefore, any team can pick up as many good players as he/she wants. Since there is no benefit to keeping them on the roster for any length of time (since there are no games being played), it shouldn't matter when a manager drops a player.
The free-agent pool should have been locked shortly after the last day of the season, and then reopened after the draft (as normal). This would keep the balance between teams who can afford to wait until it's too late to pick up the players that are dropped and the teams who cannot wait.
We should pick a date which will freeze all players on current rosters. This would mean that all players who are on a roster as of that date cannot be picked up if they are dropped at any point thereafter. However, all players in the FA pool would be eligible to be picked up as per the normal league rules (12-31). Maybe pick a date a week or two after the WS ends?

Or we can table this decision until next year...

I agree with Turk. For this year, since there's still a lot of managers that haven't checked in and voiced their opinions we should keep it as midnight on New Years Eve.
However, what I think could work is this. If a manager knows which 12 players he/she is going to keep, they can declare them here on the message boards with a note saying "tentative". They wouldn't be held to the finality of that list until the keepers are set. This way, owners that are either trying to decide who they'll keep, or are trying to trade keeper-worthy players before the deadline, don't have to worry about dropping them on ESPN and having someone pick them up.
The player's that aren't on their list get manually dropped by one of the League Managers after the deadline and no one can pick them up because keepers are already set. They just go into the draft pool.

I guess we never really agreed upon a solution to this problem. I agree that sometime after the season ends, we should either eliminate all FA pick-ups, or at least restrict those players dropped after the agreed upon date from being added.

We've got a majority 9 votes on this one. Looks like the deadline for adding players this year is 12/31.
11:59 pm, shall we say?

We've got a majority 9 votes on this one. Looks like our keeper deadline this year is 12/31. 11:59 pm, shall we say? ? The keeper deadline was never up for debate? It's 12/31, 12am EST. That way it doesn't interfere with anyone's New Year's Eve plans. Everyone can add players up until the deadline per the normal waiver/free agent system.
